Find the right diet for you - just ask some questions


Answer these questions when you are considering going on a diet for your best chance of success.

1. What are you trying to accomplish?
Do you just want to
lose weight so you look great for a party this weekend? Are your clothes feeling just a little snug? Or do you want or need to lose a greater amount of weight and drop a few sizes?

2. Is there a specific deadline you are trying to meet?
If you are trying to lose 50 lbs in a week, sorry, there is no way to safely do that. However, if you want to just lose a pound or two so that special outfit fits a bit better next week, then a diet is possible.

3. Do you intend this diet to be a lifestyle change or is it a quick fix?
If you are just trying to look better for a special occasion, then a cabbage-soup or other fad diet may suit your purpose. However, if you want to lose a lot of weight and keep it off for good, you would do better with a weight-loss program that focuses on shedding the pounds gradually over time.

4. If you are looking at a specific diet, do you like the food?
A vegan diet may sound appealing, but if you are a true carnivore, you may get tired of looking at nothing but lettuce by the second day. Likewise, a diet based on cabbage may indeed "melt away the pounds" but if cabbage makes you gassy, is that really the way you want to do it? (Is it the way your family and coworkers would want you to do it?)

5. Does the diet seem reasonable?
If a diet is promising you will lose a pound or two a week by teaching you realistic eating habits, then it may be a reasonable way to lose weight. Likewise, if the diet makes reasonable concessions for special occasions or day-to-day occurrences, you may want to consider it. Otherwise, the nothing-but-bananas diet may not work for you.

6. Are you healthy enough for this diet?
If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, allergies etc., you really should see your doctor before starting on a diet. Likewise, if you are on medications, check to make sure your new diet will not interfere with their effectiveness. Crash dieting can really affect your health in a bad way.

7. What will this new diet cost you?
If you have to break the bank buying exotic foods, you may not have the money to see it through. You also may get tired of the hassle of finding them.
